The Monday Minute

Door Hardware Specification Tips
for better designers and builders.

One minute a week to help you make better choices.

F*ing Closets

We mean "Floating Closets", as in minimal latching,  in the sense of using nothing that makes a real connection, no noise,  no visually disturbing strike lips.

We spend a lot of time fixing specs around full-sized closet doors. We're still seeing Rockwood roller latches on some schedules. They're noisy and ugly.

Here are a couple of simple alternatives.

SITUATION 1 :
Let's assume you want to have a pull of some sort, whether Offset Flush Pulls (like the HB675s above) or other mounted pulls

SOLUTION : Consider using Precision Magnetic Catches.

WHY :

  1. They're Silent (no late night cringes)
  2. They're Adjustable (unlike other magnetic catches)
  3. They come in two different strengths for big doors and bigger doors.
  4. Nice clean look. You can use them up top or on the side jamb.
  5. They Work. Forever.
(they also have a smaller version for your lighter, thinner doors)

SITUATION 2 :
The maximum minimalist solution. Assuming you don't want to see any hardware on the outside of the door.

SOLUTION : our Ultimate Magnetic Push Latch

WHY :

  1. It's built for large doors. Really, it's the only one we know that has 12 lbs of pushing force.
  2. It works. Titanium springs make these strong and reliable.
  3. It looks slick. Two finishes, black or anodized aluminum
Always in stock for those pre CO inspection punch lists.

Extra Credit (if you've got the extra time)

Like many of you, with all these banks of multiple flush outswing closet doors we're usually suggesting concealed hinges for a clean butt-less look.

WHY :
  1. No Butts sticking out.
  2. They're 3-D adjustable. Keeping those gaps perfect is critical to having everything look tight.
  3. We have solutions for doors with mirror cladding.
  4. Both have solutions for recessed frames for frameless door systems which need to clear drywall that comes right up flush with the door.

MORE : But what about overlay doors, you say? That's for another Monday. We are also specifying adjustable pivot hinges with closing function for some closet situations. Next week we'll give you more details.

Until next week...
